The language setting of AOL Mail is not limited to the visible menu in the inbox. It depends on a global AOL language/region setting, attached to the account itself and not just to the mail.aol.com interface. Changing this central setting propagates French across all AOL services linked to the account, including email.
French login URL for AOL: the shortcut that guides ignore
AOL exposes a login entry point with explicit language parameters. The address login.aol.com/?lang=fr-fr&intl=fr forces the login interface to French, regardless of the browser or operating system language.
We recommend this URL on shared computers (office, library, borrowed computer) where reconfiguring the browser language is neither desirable nor always possible. The intl=fr parameter acts server-side: it is AOL that serves the page in French, not the browser that translates it.
Once logged in via this URL, the session retains French for browsing the inbox. If you want to easily set AOL Mail to French without touching system preferences, this is the most direct method.
Note: this URL forcing does not change the account language setting. Upon the next login from mail.aol.com without the parameters in the URL, the interface will revert to the language saved in the profile. For a persistent change, you need to intervene in the account settings.
AOL account settings: change the display language permanently
The permanent setting is found in the AOL account preferences, not in the email options. The distinction is technical but crucial: AOL Mail inherits the language set at the global account level.
Accessing the account language preferences
From the inbox, click on the profile icon (top right corner), then on “Account Info” or “Informations du compte” depending on the current language. The account management page opens in a separate tab.
In the section dedicated to language and location, select “Français (France)” or “Français (Canada)” according to your regional preference. Confirm, then log out and log back in. The change only takes effect after a new session.
What this setting concretely changes
- The inbox menus (Compose, Reply, Forward, Delete) switch to French
- The names of system folders (Inbox, Sent, Trash, Spam) display in French in the web interface
- The confirmation messages and security alerts generated by AOL adopt the account language
However, the custom folders you created in English retain their original names. They must be renamed manually.
AOL Mail on mobile app: the region setting that changes the language
On the AOL mobile app (Android and iOS), the mechanism differs from the web version. The language of the interface partly depends on the Country/Region setting accessible in the app.
The path is as follows: Profile, then Settings, then General Settings, then Country or Region. Select “France” to get an interface suited to French, with localized date and time formats.
This setting affects the language displayed in the app, but also the editorial content offered by AOL (news feeds, suggestions). Changing the region in the app does not automatically synchronize the web account language. The two settings are independent.
If the app remains in English after changing the region, check your phone’s system language. The AOL Mail app also relies on the operating system locale to determine the display language. A phone set to English may force the app to ignore the region setting.
AOL server limits: what remains in English despite your settings
Even with all settings correctly configured, some elements of AOL Mail do not switch to French. We observe three recurring cases.
IMAP folder names server-side
The IMAP folders stored on AOL servers have standardized English names (Inbox, Sent, Trash, Bulk Mail). When you set up AOL in a third-party client like Outlook or Thunderbird, these names come through as they are. The email client may visually remap them to French, but the matching depends on its own translation table.
On Outlook desktop, remapping is automatic for standard folders. On Thunderbird, you may sometimes need to manually assign the “Sent” folder to the “Envoyés” folder in the account settings.
System emails and security notifications
Emails sent by AOL (unusual login alerts, password change confirmations, security summaries) are generated server-side. The majority of these messages remain written in English, regardless of the account language. AOL does not localize all of its notification templates.
IMAP/SMTP configuration in a third-party client
The server settings to be filled in remain the same regardless of the language:
- IMAP server: imap.aol.com, port 993, SSL/TLS encryption
- SMTP server: smtp.aol.com, port 465 or 587, SSL/TLS encryption
- Authentication: application password if two-step verification is enabled
These technical values do not change according to the language. A client configured in French will display its own menus in French but will communicate with AOL servers in English at the protocol level.
Thus, switching AOL Mail to French relies on three distinct levers: the configured login URL, the global account language setting, and the mobile app region setting. None of these three levers covers all cases. Combining them ensures a predominantly French interface, with the caveat that some server messages and IMAP folder names escape user control.
